Sortir du pot au noir
L'humanisme juridique comme boussole
Mireille Delmas-Marty

Just as the environmental crisis our planet is currently experiencing is unprecedented, now more than ever, humanity needs to come together around our shared values and build a true global community of common destiny. In a world in which our interdependency is constantly growing, nations are illusory shelters. Thanks to Copernicus and Galileo, we know that the Earth is not the center of the universe, yet we still need to fully come to terms with the idea that humanity is not the only component of the Earth.

This new world order, founded on the duty for solidarity – between current generations and those to come, as well as between humans and non-humans – needs to be established on a planetary scale.

But since human beings are neither heroes nor saints, the outcome of such a gamble remains uncertain.

Far too often recently, nationalistic points of view have taken precedence over the universalism of human rights. Yet does that necessarily mean that we must abandon the idea of a global legal order?

Just as the environmental crisis our planet is currently experiencing is unprecedented, now more than ever, humanity needs to come together around our shared values and build a true global community of common destiny.

Are any legal systems capable of protecting human rights? Far too often recently, nationalistic points of view have taken precedence over the universalism of human rights. Yet does that necessarily mean that we must abandon the idea of a global legal order?
