Roger Puyravau

What do we see? A young woman, fleeing, that a driver named Alvar barely avoids running over. As for him, he’s on the trail of his sister’s murderers. Men who sliced her up with a chain saw in front of a camera. That’s Mareil’s job, he’s a dealer who owns several sex-shops where he sells the snuff movies that he churns out. Snuff movies – the ones where the actresses are tortured, raped then killed. The man, who started out with nothing, now owns a porn empire that acts as a cover for his commerce with, among others, a certain Sissoko. He is a plotter, the guru of an African sect that encourages its faithful to eat human flesh at its assemblies. So their interests are complementary: Mareil has to get rid of the corpses that his activities produce, and Sissoko needs a supplier in human matter for his cannibalistic orgies. While Alvar investigates, other characters are drawn to the deadly power of images. Like the famous painter Morgen, whose bloody canvases are eulogized by the critics and contribute to the contemporary fascination with dismantling.

Morsels decomposes the multi-media enchantment that aggresses each of us, and through the reader’s eyes queries voyeurism, human merchandise, the desire to dismember women’s bodies into slices and illustrates the spectacle of a civilization obsessed with its own death. Like an over-focussed lens, Roger Puyravau handles language with irony and lucidity in order to pierce the illusion of remote-controlled existences.
