Le Théâtre des rêves
Bernard Foglino

The Theatre of Dreams is a pub for real football fans, i.e. fans of the real thing, from pre-1975 (the fateful year when players started wearing ads on their jerseys). There, time stops every night, and the TV plays historic matches worthy of ancient Greek tragedies. That’s where Baptiste shows up one day. His job: supplying collectors with the missing piece for their collections. It’s a high-risk job, with no security. Baptiste’s current client, a complete lunatic, has hired him to find a rare item: a photo book about the 1973 soccer championships.
Baptiste couldn’t care less about soccer, or much of anything else, either. He’s a solitary young man, with no past, who piously preserves an old family photo and cultivates the dream-like memory of a mysterious woman. Unlike the regulars at the Theatre of Dreams, he lives from day to day and exploits the past by seeling absurd promotional items from the 70s to alienated men.
Unexpectedly, the soccer book will unleash passions. Several people are on its trail; and they’re ready to duke it out. Lurching from one shock wave to the next, Baptiste will be forced to open his eyes at last, and to see that the story being played out is his own.

A search for roots, hidden in an off-beat detective story.
