La Femme de l’analyste
Bruno Tessarech

The narrator of The Analyst’s Wife is a writer who gets depressed when he can’t write any more. Determined not to give up without a fight, he lies down one fine morning on the analyst’s couch. Where he babbles for three years.
The story takes place in Pau, a provincial city with an old-fashioned charm. The narrator lives there, in an old building belonging to Madame Soulages, his downstairs neighbor, a horrible old witch. Time goes by, as it does on this side of the Pyrenees, to the rhythm of the seasons, his boredom, and his appointments with the analyst.
On the couch, as the weeks pass by, the narrator wonders about and becomes obsessed with the analyst’s  personality. Who is this guy? Is he married? Single? What do the paintings hanging in his waiting room mean? And what about the bike locked to the stair railing? Is the name scribbled next to the analyst’s on the doorbell, Heidi Van Meegeren, the analyst’s wife? Obsessively (he is a writer after all), the narrator investigates. For the analyst’s wife, he happens to learn, has just left the analyst. When he finds out that she has gone back to Oosterend, a small town on the isle of Terscheling (third from the left in the string of islands in Western Friesland), the narrator doesn’t hesitate for an instant, but rushes off like a madman to the distant Netherlands to find her…
'The Analyst’s Wife' is a light-hearted story about the serious subject of psychoanalysis. Bruno Tessarech has pulled off a delightful novel that describes the long journey towards reconciliation and serenity that each of us must undertake one day.

A writer with writer’s block starts an analysis. Little by little, his analysis comes to consist of analyzing his analyst! And entertaining the absolute fantasy question: who is his wife? A light-hearted novel about a subject that has been written about extensively by social scientists, but rarely addressed by novelists: psychoanalysis.
