Giacometti
  • Son of the painter Giovanni Giacometti, Alberto Giacometti was born in the village of Stampa, in south-eastern Switzerland, in 1901. By 1914, he was already creating his first painted or sculpted portraits, using members of his family as models. In the 1930s, after stays in Padua and Rome, he arrived in Paris, where he became friends with André Breton. Bored with his membership in the Surrealist group, he hesitated for a certain time between abstraction and representing bodies, before choosing to work on his own, often using close relations as models. He died in Coire (Switzerland) in 1966.
