Waking up one morning, the first thing Pierre thinks of is his grandfather. He can’t shake the thought of him all morning. At noon, when he goes to get his mail, he finds a letter from… his grandfather. How strange! Especially since the old man died several years ago. The letter, the first of several, warns his grandson about the meaning he is giving his life, and urges him to live in the present. Soon another mystery is layered over the first one, when Pierre realizes that a young woman, met by chance on line in a department store, is following him. With a light touch, only gradually providing clues and explanations, Sweet Dreams is a real page-turner. Cleverly constructed, enjoyable to read, in many ways, this novella will remind readers of Anna Gavalda’s short stories.
