L’instinct de conversation
Daniel Spoerri
Daniel Spoerri

For nearly a half a century, Daniel Spoerri has been one of the most famous names in contemporary art. The inventor of the tableau-piège, or picture-trap, signer of the Nouveaux Réalistes manifesto, active member of the Fluxus group, as well as being on good terms with other groups, such as Zéro, Panique and Daily-Bul, Spoerri has been rubbing shoulders with most of the avant-gardes since the late 1950s. By making art a material for life and his life into a work of art, he has overturned conventions to invent multiple new possibilities for action.

In a free-wheeling conversation with Alexandre Devaux, he describes, with fabulous story-telling skill, a life of adventure and creativeness. Spoerri describes an extraordinary path, studded with intense friendships, with, among others, Jean Tinguely, Dieter Roth, Meret Oppenheim, Eva Aeppli, Soto, Marcel Duchamp, Robert Filliou, Topor and Erik Dietman.

Above and beyond his own life, the book also explores one of the richest artistic periods in the western world and brings the vibrancy of 1960s and 70s avant-gardes back to life.
