The house isn’t beautiful, the house isn’t clean, the house isn’t tidy. The lock is broken. My father smashed it one night, with three sharp kicks.

In the very late 60s, in early summer. A dreary little town in the Alps in the shadow of mountain with a towering statue of the Virgin Mary perched on its peak, keeping watch over the valley. Inside a completely dysfunctional family, the father frequently attempts to commit suicide by swallowing all his belladonna pills. The mother is domineering. The selfish, brutal oldest son is obsessed with training for a sports event that he believes can change his whole life. The sister has been reduced to silence. How can you claim an existence in a little world smothered by violence? How can you escape? And where would you go? In this short, dark novel, without a superfluous line to it, the narrator, the youngest child in the family, makes his memories resonate while searching for a way towards freedom.
